Dominique Perrault’s iconic landmark in Vienna, is known for its unique appearance, which includes the tower and its surrounding area. Originally, special wind umbrellas were installed to reduce and redirect vertical winds, making the area around the tower pleasant for all users. Over time, the umbrellas needed to be replaced to withstand the increasingly heavy winds. The client’s goal was to redesign them in a way that would align with the tower’s identity while enhancing the urban landscape and allowing people to enjoy the tower front.

The new umbrella design analyzed the wind situation and redesigned the height and scale of the umbrellas to withstand the forceful winds. The design underwent iterations between 3D modeling and physical wind channel testing. The umbrellas now have an expanded metal coverage that allows wind to pass through its small holes. The design also included flexible and modular furniture configurations where people can gather under the shade of the umbrellas in a playful way. Seating and standing modules are arranged to accommodate small or larger groups for lunch breaks or outdoor meetings, with integrated outlets for convenience. This allows people to spend more time outside in a professional environment, which is particularly relevant given the past years of Covid.

The furniture groups are highlighted with dynamic wind umbrellas that differ in shape from the others and will have additional climbing plants grown on their spline. The furniture is made of wooden seating, expanded metal fronts, and brass details. The brass inlays in the concrete and the tower’s logo visually continue the brass divisions of the umbrellas’ foundation. The new design reimagines the setting as a comfortable and inviting outdoor space that reflects the tower’s identity and enhances the urban landscape.
