Bornemissza Castle rehabilitation

Bornemissza Castle, located in the heart of Hunyad County, is a testament to history and natural beauty. Situated in Ilie, a charming village on the banks of the Mures river, surrounded by the majestic Carpathian and Apuseni mountain ranges, this castle holds a special place in Transylvania’s heritage. It stands as a timeless symbol, with the red bastion serving as a reminder of its historical significance as the birthplace of Bethlen Gábor, Prince of Transylvania, in 1580.

Built over several stages starting in 1716, Bornemissza Castle acquired its classical layout and eclectic style in the mid-19th century. The castle remained the residence of the Bornemissza family until 1949. Following nationalization, it served as a hospital but now stands empty, awaiting a new chapter.

Our client sought to breathe new life into this exceptional location and restore its historic charm in a sustainable manner. The concept emerged to create a luxurious accommodation offering with 43 rooms, providing an exquisite experience for visitors. Guests can indulge in the pleasures of a high-end restaurant, savoring the flavors of locally cultivated produce from the castle’s gardens. They can also enjoy picturesque picnics on the river banks or unwind in the castle’s wellness area after a day of exploring the captivating natural and architectural wonders of the surroundings.
